Description

The tank engine was first introduced in the middle of the nineteenth century as a means of avoiding running round and turning engines at either end of the journey. The concept caught on and tank engines on passenger trains varied from the diminutive Great Western 0-4-2 tanks on Branch line work to the impressive BR Standard class 4s, which were basically small express engines fitted with side tanks. See them both – with many types in between – in this programme.
