Description

The first commercially produced postcards appeared in 1861. The first known printed picture postcard, with an image on one side, was created in France in 1870. Since the start they have provided an informal form of communication often with featured illustrations and fascinating photographs.

This varied programme uses the producer’s private railway postcard collection to tell the stories behind many railway structures, locomotives, named trains, stations and achievements. The postcard illustrations used within the programmes are supplemented with much rare archive film and an informative commentary.

Volume three concentrates on railway stations and ventures for the first time in this series overseas to include European and world railway stations of interest. In all a celebration of railway stations in all their diverse forms.

The programme is based on a talk given by the producer to the Altrincham Electric Railway Preservation Society. It includes Kings Cross, London Victoria, Euston, St Pancras, Leicester Midland, Rugby, Birmingham New Street, Newcastle, Carlisle, Exeter Central, Weymouth Quay, the Ffestiniog and Talyllyn railways, the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch railway, the Isle of Mull Narrow Gauge Railway and many more! There is also a special short feature on the Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway in a fascinating photo charter segment.

Overseas: Boston South Station (USA), Basel (Switzerland), Vienna North (Austria), French tramways, and the famous Darjeeling Himalayan Railway are included.
